MT NAMADGI - THE DEFINITIVE ROUTE?

Trips

I've been to Mt Namadgi on several occasions: 30Sep-2Oct 06 (as an overnight trip), then three day trips for birthday celebrations 10 Nov 07, 7 Nov 08, 7 Nov 09, 6 Nov 10, missed a year so a recce to nearby 3 Nov 12, and 10 Nov 12. You'd think I'd have the definitive track.

The bush is certainly getting thicker, especially after the wet 2011 and 2012 seasons, and this walker is certainly getting older.

The KMZ files for the trips are: 30Sep-2Oct 06, 10 Nov 07, 7 Nov 08, 7 Nov 09, 6 Nov 10, 3 Nov 12 and 10 Nov 12.

The Definitive Route?

Section Distance Description (all GRs MGA94)
1 4.2km Start at the Yankee Hat car park GR 78464-41186. Follow the Yankee Hat Walking Track across the grasslands and cross the bridge over Bogong Creek. At the end of the boardwalk, strike off up the grassy incline and head towards Mt Namadgi above the mouth of Middle Creek. 290° magnetic is a useful bearing; another check is to pass near the gate at GR 76973-42850. Continue on your chosen line into the mouth of Middle Creek or, if you prefer, sidle down to the north to join an old vehicle track. The vehicle track ends on the bank of Middle Creek. There is a tape at GR 75792-43551. Look for a large granite boulder on the opposite bank of the creek. Cross the creek to the NE side and go around the side of the boulder. This is a recognised indigenous rock shelter at GR 75730-43594 and has signage.
2 0.7km Walk uphill, perpendicular to the creek for around 40m, skirting the shrubs. Turn left and find an open lead to join reasonably well defined animal pads enhanced by human feet, down through a feeder creek line and up to cross the old fence line at GR 75313-44007.
3 0.9km Continue to follow animal pads through light scrub to cross the next side creek at GR 74798-44614. This point is 200m above Middle Creek.
4 1.2km Continue to stay high in crossing the crest of the shallow spur ahead. Closer down to Middle Creek has pea and wattle regrowth. 320° magnetic is good to get you to the crossing of the next feeder line at GR 74333-45571.
5 1.0km Around 316° magnetic, travelling a little closer to Middle Creek (say, 70-100m), gets you to the next feeder creek at GR 73893-46317.
6 0.5km About 300m ahead is the top junction of Middle Creek, with an arm going up to Rotten Swamp, the arm to Big Creamy Flats and another feeder creek joining from a northerly direction. It's a wet area (I know from experience) and it's best to stay high and cross the feeder creek. Since Karen C pointed this out to me, I'll call it Kaz's crossing. Head on 312° magnetic to Kaz's crossing at GR 73609-46724.
7 1.6km Pick the best going on up Middle Creek. 305° magnetic is useful to the point Keep up from Creek at GR 72791-47727.
8 1.9km Use 307° magnetic to continue up the NE bank of Middle Creek. Do not cross the creek. Break out onto Big Creamy Flats at the saddle at GR 71720-49028.
9 0.65km Head down the SW side of Big Creamy Flats, picking the driest route along the edge of the treeline. Do this to improve your angle of attack on Namadgi - if you go up from the saddle you'll run into small cliffs. Leave Big Creamy Flats at around GR 71236-49315.
10 1.0km Head for the Namadgi ridge at GR 70822-48495. Don't be tempted to swing left.
11 0.4km Mt Namadgi tors are at 145° magnetic, up along the sub-alpine top, at GR 70978-48104. The significant stone arrangements are at GR 71034-48438 (two adjacent sites with old signage) and a smaller arrangement within view from the top at GR 71034-48159.
Notes for return: From the saddle, leave at 140° magnetic, but get onto the NE side of Middle Creek
